The Kruger/MEUSC test is a morphological analysis of a sperm sample.

In other words, a more comprehensive sperm analysis in terms of the strict criteria, for which we use a very critical colour miscroscope assessment before and after the sperm purification to determine the percentage of sperm cells that have a perfect shape and appearance.

We now know that normally men have only between 5% and 12% morphologically normal sperm cells according to the strict criteria. In all probability, fewer men among subfertile couples have a corresponding number of normal sperm cells.

A few percent of the men have over 12 % normal sperm cells in accordance with these criteria, but we meet very few of them at the fertility clinic. However, we do meet a lot of men with less than 4 % morphologically normal sperm cells, and for them this means that achieving a spontaneous pregnancy is a lengthy process that may never happen.
These couples need assistance, and it is important to examine:

1. How many sperm cells we can remove from a normal sperm sample and
2. Most important of all – how many of the normal sperm cells we can include in the sperm purification preparation that we use for treatment.

The test shows the percent of normal sperm cells before and after purification.

The sperm is used exclusively for diagnostics in connection with the couple’s fertility examination/treatment. Some rules should be followed to ensure the sperm sample is as good as possible:

  1. Ejaculation should be avoided for the last three days before the test is conducted and collected.
  2. It is important that the clinic’s laboratory receives a sample that is not contaminated. The hands and penis should be washed with soap and water, all the soap must be rinsed off and you should dry yourself before the sample is produced and collected.
  3. The test is accomplished by masturbation.
  4. The test must be stored at 35 - 37C (held close to the body) until delivered at the clinic – and before two hours have elapsed.
  5. The man’s identity must be clearly written on a label on the beaker or test tube.
