Microinsemination, ICSI behandling
(Intra-Cytoplasmic-Sperm-Injection)

Microinsemination is a relatively new treatment method, known since 1994, that has become increasingly popular during the last 4-5 years due to the good results with even extremely bad quality sperm, and when previous attempts using other methods have been made to facilitate the sperm’s passage through the egg membrane.

The principle of the ICSI method is that after egg extraction, in connection with normal IVF treatment the eggs removed are fertilised through inserting a single carefully selected sperm cell right into the interior of the egg by way of a glass pipette without otherwise damaging the structure of the egg. The glass pipette is an extremely thin and sharp needle approx. 6/1000 mm in diameter.

After this process, the fertilised eggs are cultivated in nutritional liquid in microdrops or in the usual way with regular IVF treatment.

The ensuing treatment follows the usual egg-transfer procedures.

The sperm cells can be produced through ejaculation or we can extract them from the epididymes or testicles.

The ICSI method can be used for all types of male infertility provided just a few live sperm cells can be found either in the ejaculated sperm or can be extracted from the testicles or epididymes. See also
